Caroline Logush, our new guest RISE 3x3 writer, gives more details about the new announcement and why this is such a momentous time for British basketball and 3x3.
Today, it was announced by UK Sport that the British Basketball Federation (BBF) has been allocated £2.925 million for the four years leading to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. In addition, £1.55 million is being channeled through the local Home Country Association (HCA) Basketball England - provided by Sport England.
The British Basketball Foundation (BBF) has been allocated £2.925 million by UK Sport for the four years leading to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The goal? To create a sustainable, coherent, long-term world class 3x3 programme and keep growing the 5v5 pathway, including a focus on elite performance that works towards a now even more real, exciting common goal - the LA 2028 Olympic Games.
The strategy includes plans for high quality development of coaches and professional staff. In addition, that means there will be more collaboration between GB and the Home Countries with 5v5 getting a big boost too, strengthening the player pathway, coach development and player welfare.
It's the first time UK Sport and Sport England have teamed up like this and it represents a more than threefold increase in public funding for elite basketball at GB level.
Martin Dyan, CEO & Founder, RISE 3x3 Basketball believes that the future is very bright.“This is, quite simply, an amazing moment in British Basketball history. Not only will the UK Sport funding have a massive, positive impact on the growth of 3x3 and basketball overall, it’s the first real step towards the dream of having a GB team in LA 2028 Olympics.”

Basketball is the second most-played team sport among young people, but has arguably not received adequate funding to gain the same traction in the UK as it has in other countries. Despite this, the GB men and women rose to 41st and 29th in the world 3x3 rankings. The significant increase in public funding for the sport gives Great Britain the potential to become one of the world’s top contenders by 2028.

Since 2017, RISE 3x3 has been committed to making Basketball one of the most recognised sports in the UK - the organisation created the UK’s first 3x3 league (the RISE 3x3 City league) and continues to work in communities all across the UK to deliver the benefits of basketball to people from all backgrounds. We are seeng a major chapter in UK basketball unfold. Welcome to the new era!
